Did you know that rough diamonds often do not look impressive at first sight?
They can be dark, dull, irregular, and not particularly nice to look at. The brilliance we associate with a diamond only appears after it has been cut and polished. Only then do the different facets reflect the light and reveal its precious nature.
IP rights are similar.
At first glance, IP rights do not reveal their true value. To understand it, you have to look at their different facets.
One important facet is legal strength.
How broad is the protection? What do we really protect? Can the protection be circumvented?
Another facet is business relevance.
What is the relevance of this patent for our business? Does it fit our current product portfolio? Does it fit our strategic planning?
But there is also a cost facet.
Every IP right costs money to create and to maintain. Is this money we still want to invest in this asset? Is this right really adding value to the company?
Only by looking through all these different facets does the true value of an IP right become visible.
So the real question is:
Do you have a chest of rocks, or a chest of diamonds?
