Patent Valuation

An opportunity

A win-win opportunity for PatSnap

While going through the valuations PatSnap assigns to patents, it suddenly hit me: there is a huge opportunity, right there!

PatSnap should offer to buy patents at 10% of the value it assigns to each patent. This is obviously a win-win situation.

PatSnap gets the patents at a massive discount, while the owners would likely be very happy with the deal.

How to value patents at Patent Cockpit

For all others, we at Patent Cockpit think the best approach to value patents is to show the relationship between patents, the products they protect, and the turnover or profits associated with those products. That gives a strong indication of the financial relevance: what commercial value is connected to it, what business activity it supports, and how important it is to protect that position.

Another useful approach is the model used under German employee inventor law. In simplified terms, the calculation takes the invention's economic value — for example via a licence analogy or measurable business benefit — and adjusts it by the inventor's contribution or participation share. In Patent Cockpit, we can also calculate a patent's value this way.
