Trademark class (Nice Classification)

A trademark class is one of the 45 categories of goods and services used to organize trademark applications worldwide under the Nice Classification system. Classes 1 to 34 cover goods such as chemicals, cosmetics, machines, and clothing, while classes 35 to 45 cover services such as advertising, financial services, legal services, and transportation. When filing a trademark, the applicant must specify the classes that match the actual or planned use of the mark — protection is granted only in the listed classes. Choosing the right classes is a strategic decision: too narrow and competitors can register similar marks in adjacent classes; too broad and renewal costs rise.
