Maintenance fee (design)

The fee paid to renew a registered design and keep it in force for the next protection period.

Design maintenance fees — also called renewal fees — are paid at the end of each protection period (typically every five years) to keep a registered design in force. They are paid separately in every jurisdiction where the design is registered, and fees differ per country. Design rights generally cannot be renewed indefinitely: most systems set a maximum term beyond which renewal is no longer possible, so design renewal planning is also about deciding when to stop paying.
